Real vs. Fake NeeDoh: How to Tell Before You Buy
Share
NeeDoh has been hard to find all year, and where real NeeDoh runs short, fakes show up: at mall kiosks, in social media ads, and on websites with "NeeDoh" in the name. A fake can look close in a photo. In your hand, it is a different story. Here are six things to check before you pay.
1. The box: matte, not shiny
Schylling, the company that makes NeeDoh, prints its boxes on good-quality matte card. Counterfeit boxes are often thin, shiny cardboard, with blurry printing or odd spelling. A genuine box carries the NeeDoh logo and the Schylling name.

2. No plastic bag inside the box
According to Schylling, a genuine NeeDoh never comes wrapped in a separate plastic bag inside its box. If you open a box and find the toy in an inner bag, treat it as a red flag.
3. The Schylling mark on the toy
Turn it over. Most genuine NeeDoh have a NeeDoh logo on the base near the seal, with the Schylling logo below it. Some only carry the Schylling mark. No mark at all is a warning sign.
4. The barcode
The barcodes on Schylling's products start with 019649, the company's prefix. A NeeDoh box with a barcode that starts with anything else deserves a second look.
5. Smell and feel
A genuine NeeDoh has little scent. A brand-new one can smell faintly of glue for a day or two out of the box, and then it fades. A strong chemical smell that does not go away is a bad sign. So is a surface that feels greasy or sticky, or a squish that is runny and overly soft. A few tiny air bubbles inside can be normal; a cloudy, bubbly blob is not.
6. Where it is sold
- Kiosks: Schylling says it does not sell to mall kiosks, so NeeDoh sold at a kiosk is likely fake.
- Copycat websites: a site with "NeeDoh" in its address is not automatically official. Watch for names with extra words like "store" or "outlet", prices that look too good to be true, and countdown timers that reset every time you reload.
- "NeeDoh style" listings: "like NeeDoh", "NeeDoh style" or "same as NeeDoh" means it is not NeeDoh.
- Check the retailer list: Schylling's own site, schylling.com, is the official source and lists where its toys are sold.
Why it matters
A counterfeit squishy may not have gone through the safety testing a genuine toy has. If a squishy smells strongly of chemicals, leaks, or has poorly sealed seams, keep it away from children.
